Mirror by Sylvia Plath - The third analysis - Lenonn/Wherdan
The third analysis.
Mirror
I am silver
and exact. I have no preconceptions.
Whatever I see I swallow immediately
Just as it is, unmisted by love or dislike.
I am not cruel, only truthful ‚
The eye of a little god, four-cornered.
Most of the time I meditate on the opposite wall.
It is pink, with speckles. I have looked at it so long
I think it is part of my heart. But it flickers.
Faces and darkness separate us over and over.
Now I am a lake. A woman bends over me,
Searching my reaches for what she really is.
Then she turns to those liars, the candles or the moon.
I see her back, and reflect it faithfully.
She rewards me with tears and an agitation of hands.
I am important to her. She comes and goes.
Each morning it is her face that replaces the darkness.
In me she has drowned a young girl, and in me an old woman
Rises toward her day after day, like a terrible fish.
Whatever I see I swallow immediately

ANALYSIS
Sylvia Plath was born in
Boston, Massachusetts on October 27, 1932 and she had published her first poem
at the age of eight in the children’s section of Boston Herald. Plath had
depression and made in August 1953 her first medically documented attempt to
commit suicide. She took her mother’s sleeping pills and crawled under her
house where she remained for three days. Sylvia was sent in psychiatric care
for six months where she was given an electric shock and insulin treatment. On
February 11, 1963 Plath had finally committed suicide using her gas oven.
Sylvia Plath was one of the most renowned
and influential poets, novelist, and short story writers of the 20th
century. Plath wrote "Mirror" in 1961. In this poem, a mirror describes its existence
and its owner, who grows older as the mirror watches.
This poem is written in
free verse and contains two stanzas. The title is the main idea of the poem,
because the poem talks about the mirror itself. There is a personification of
the mirror.
In the first stanza,
the mirror reflects what is real. As you read it between the lines, it shows
how anyone can pass by it and just see the reality. The mirror has just a pink
wall in front of it. As the woman appears, the mirror changes itself slowly to
find out her fantasy, the woman sees that her reality is too hard to be dealt,
as the reality of any human being.
In the second stanza,
the mirror becomes a lake and shows what the woman wanted to see. The mirror
personified itself to a lake, something that reflects things in a beautiful
way, surrounded by nature.
The woman can see
herself during beautiful days of sunshine or maybe under the moonlight. It
doesn’t matter what she sees about herself at all. She sees her wishes, her
dreams, her goods and the mirror swallow them. The mirror has the woman’s life
for itself, and the woman gets terrified by her fantasy, as she grows older and
older and she is swallowed by the idea the mirror brings to her.

Music Analysis - Hall of Fame - Nathalia Rodrigues
Hall of Fame –
The Script ft. Will.i.am
The song is considered pop rock. It was written and
co-produced by the Script. It was release in 2012 and is the lead single from
their Third Studio album. The track features Will.i.am from The Black Eyed
Peas.
The lyrics in this song are very important and
stronge because it is about following dreams and making an impact on the
world.
“You can be the greatest”, “You can be the
best”, “You can be a master”, “dedicate yourself and you gon’ find yourself”, “
the world’s gonna know your name”, “ You’ll be on the walls of fame” these
phrases emphasize the meaning of the song. In an interview with Danny, Mark and
Glen, band members, to “Palco Principal”, Mark said we are in a television
culture, where anyone can be famous for trivial things and this is a danger to
our culture. The objective of this song is to break this criterion to be famous
for insignificant things. The message in the song is to do important things and
achieve our goals. Mark also highlights that this song was made to inspire common
people and not athletes who already have a goal in mind, Mark believes that this song can inspire common people more than athletes, because the athletes usually have big dreams and big plans.
Seeing this, we can understand the song
context, which is concerned for our culture and society. it seems we are in this
“television culture” as Mark said, but I complement saying that nowadays the
internet culture is stronger than television culture and because of that it appears the alienation.
Considering the instrumental part of the
song, it is easy to see the motivational character both in the lyrics and in the melody
because the melody is active and accelerated. The two together help to
strengthen the song message.

Alone
by Edgar Allan Poe
From childhood's hour I
have not been
As others were -- I have
not seen
As others saw -- I could
not bring
My passions from a common
spring --
From the same source I have
not taken
My sorrow -- I could not
awaken
My heart to joy at the
same tone --
And all I lov'd -- I
lov'd alone --
Then -- in my childhood
-- in the dawn
Of a most stormy life --
was drawn
From ev'ry depth of good
and ill
The mystery which binds
me still --
From the torrent, or the
fountain --
From the red cliff of the
mountain --
From the sun that 'round
me roll'd
In its autumn tint of
gold --
From the lightning in the
sky
As it pass'd me flying by
--
From the thunder, and the
storm --
And the cloud that took
the form
(When the rest of Heaven
was blue)
Of a demon in my view –
Analysis of
the poem
Alone is an autobiographical poem written by
Edgar Allan Poe and published in 1875. This poem expresses his feelings of
depression and mixed with the vague sense of betrayal that causes the death of
someone dear to the author. The past tense is the verbal tense present in this
poem. In a way, Poe’s poems show a particularly troubled period, in the life of
the young Edgar Allan Poe, who was only twenty years old when he composed it.
The poet shows us, in these verses, his
vision of the reality, which is dark and how a very young boy is aware that
these kinds of thoughts will follow him along his life path and will be
elementary essential in his literary productions. In addition, it gives us
indications that he, not the others, deals with young people and his vision of
what surrounds them. This vision is something that he does not share with the
others. It seems because, surely, his friends and colleagues do not understand
or accept him. This poem shows us a writer, an artist who finds inspiration in
the darkest part of the human condition. This is something, which others would
consider negative and however, it is the same for the poet or even greater, in
beauty images and more idealized. In the first part of the poem, “I have not
been; As others were -- I have not seen; As others saw”, the author is talking
about his personality, the difference between him and the other children and
also about what he has experienced in his life until that moment, all the
things that happened in front of his eyes. The line, “And all I lov'd -- I
lov'd alone”, is specifically about the things he liked to do and what used to
call his attention. When he says “[…] in the dawn; Of a most stormy life” and “good
and ill”, he links the past and present; we can translate this as the beginning
of a problematic life with good moments and also the presence of health
problems. As we know, Poe’s mother and his wife died of the same disease and he
surely wondered why these coincidences happened. In the last part of the poem,
he uses elements of the nature to describe the moments when he was used to
reflect about his life and that he is haunted by his thoughts. He wrote: “And
the cloud that took the form; (When the rest of Heaven was blue); Of a demon in
my view”, to exemplify that even when everything seemed to be fine, he was
worried about the same problems, there was always something bothering him and
making his life the worst possible.
Analyzing
these figures of speech, we can notice that Edgar Allan Poe had great ability
in summarizing complex ideas into simple words with all his feelings and show
us that the mood of the poems he wrote was strongly influenced by the events in
his life. Certainly, this piece of his work is essential for the ones who wants
to be acquainted with Poe’s mind and his work.

Band Members: Nasri; Mark Pellizzer; Bem Spivak and Alex Tanas. (Obs: All members of the band are originally from Toronto, Canada).
Magic! is a Canadian music group, and
it is composed of lead vocalist, guitarist, and producer Nasri Atweh, guitarist
Mark "Pelli" Pellizzer, bass guitarist Ben Spivak, and percussionist
Alex Tanas. Active since 2012, the band has two albums. Their first album is:
Don't Kill the Magic, released in 2014, and their second studio album is:
Primary Colours released in 2016. They are most known for their hit single
"Rude", which charted at number one in several countries worldwide. The
band is heavily inspired by the musical groups: The Police, Bob Marley and the
Wailers. They are known for having a signature reggae-influenced pop sound.
The single "Rude" was
released on October 12, 2013. The song peaked at number six on the Canadian Hot
100 and also proved a great international success, topping the charts in the
United States and the United Kingdom and peaking within the top ten of the
charts in Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden.
There has been at least one
significant remix of "Rude". A remix by Russian-German producer/DJ
Zedd was premiered in his set at Lollapalooza 2014. It was released on
September 2, 2014, Zedd's 25th birthday. Zedd had said, "I'm gonna give
myself a birthday present and release my remix of ‘Rude’ on my bday, sept
2nd!" He also released official, completed full-length audio on his
Soundcloud on August 28, 2014, which garnered nearly 400,000 plays within 24
hours. While the original was still in number-one position on the Billboard Hot
100, there was speculation that release of the remix on mainstream music
outlets online would assist the original song in maintaining its position on
the chart.
This song can be heard by anyone,
of any age, without restrictions. It is smooth and its melody is sung slowly,
so we can understand what the singer is saying. For educational purposes, the
informal lyrics vocabulary can be important for students who do not know. Their
language is informal because it uses 'Cause and 'til. The value of the vocabulary
present in the lyrics is immense, because through the lyrics we can relate to others contexts.
LYRICS
Saturday morning jumped out of bed
And put on my best suit
Got in my car and raced like a jet, all the way to you
Knocked on your door with heart in my hand
To ask you a question
'Cause I know that you're an old-fashioned man, yeah, yeah
Can I have your daughter for the rest of my life?
Say yes, say yes 'cause I need to know
You say, "I'll never get your blessing 'til the day I die
Tough luck, my friend, but the answer is no! "
Why you gotta be so rude?
Don't you know I'm human, too?
Why you gotta be so rude?
I'm gonna marry her anyway
Marry that girl
Marry her anyway
Marry that girl
Yeah, no matter what you say
Marry that girl
And we'll be a family
Why you gotta be so rude?
I hate to do this, you leave no choice, can't live without her
Love me or hate me we will be both standing at that altar
Or we will run away to another galaxy, you know
You know she's in love with me, she will go anywhere I go
Can I have your daughter for the rest of my life?
Say yes, say yes 'cause I need to know
You say, "I'll never get your blessing 'til the day I die
Tough luck, my friend, 'cause the answer's still no! "

Poem Analysis: For a Depressed Woman
For a Depressed Woman

My friends do not know.
But what could my friends not know?
About what? What friends?

She sleeps late each day,
stifling each reason to rise,
choked into the quilt.

"I'll never find work."
She swallows this thought with pills,
finds tears in the glass.

By James A.
Emanuel (1921-2013)
In this poem, James A. Emanuel maybe tried to illustrate
the situation of many African-American women who suffer alone, forgotten by
society. James himself probably saw this situation happen with many people of
his community when growing up.
Actually, this poem is a haiku; the author used the
inspiration of the classic 3-line poem Haiku and tried to do something new. The poem or haiku
is divided in three parts. Together they make a story, but they can also be
read separately and still have a particular meaning for each part. The title
reflects exactly the poem content. The whole poem describes the bitter routine
of a depressed woman and her inner and social conflicts.
The author made use of metaphor to make it more clear and strong.
The woman is definitely a lonely woman. In the first
part of the poem the lady is lost in thoughts, maybe remembering some old and
gone friendships that now she can only think about and it makes her regret being
alone. She also seems to be denying her problems. In the second part, the woman
is fighting with herself in a bad way, she is not fighting against the
depression, she is feeding it when she suffocates each and every reason to get
up. In the last part of the poem, it becomes clear that the woman has a severe
depression, she is utterly pessimistic, plus she is probably addicted to prescription drugs.
Although everybody knows that depression is something hard to overcome, the woman of the
poem does not make any effort to fight it off. If she had some friends to count
on she probably would try to overcome her depression, or at least look for
help. In our view, this Haiku poem has a perfect punchline: it keeps us
wondering about the friends we have and if we value them or not. The poem also
shows that during hard times we can be the ones who hold back the possibility
for the improvement of our mental
and physical health.

STORY BY
Jim Davis
ART BY
Jim Davis
Panels
Three colored panels
DISTRIBUTION by
Universal Uclick
This comic strip seems to be made for all people,
because most of person have a pet at their houses, and this situation that
happened in this comic strip is very common. The indifference and superiority
of the cat made the dog look like a completely nonsense.
The comic strip is made up by three colored panels,
which are enough to represent this situation about the rivalry of cats and
dogs.
Jim Davis used only thought bubbles to express
Garfield’s feelings about the odd situation. The author really got across the
message he wanted to convey when it comes to the cat’s ideas about Odie’s
behavior.
All in all, this comic strip is funny for all ages and
pretty easy to understand if you have dogs and cats you will automatically feel
part of this comic strip.

Review: Calvin and Hobbes
By: Ana Carolina Guerreiro and
Daianna Andrade / Monday, August 22th, 2016.
The comic strips
“Calvin and Hobbes” written by Watterson tell us in nine frames, the history
about Calvin and his friend Hobbes, who is a tiger. This comic strip in
particular shows the boy and the tiger going to the beach. Calvin said to Hobbes that he didn’t bring
his swim trunks, and Hobbes said that he likes to “furry dipping”. They spent
few minutes there because the sand was too hot and the sea was too cold. Calvin’s
parents were so angry with the boys because they drove an hour and a half to
the beach and didn’t have fun. This comic strip is basically to entertain, both
children and adults. If I were you I would read, not only this, but all the
others comic strips by Watterson, because they are colorful, interesting and
very fun.

Comic Strip Tittle: Snoopy

Art by: Charles Schulz
Panel: Four colored panels

November 4, 1960
The first appearence of Charlie Brown and Snoopy took place on October 4, 1950, in a strip of an american newspaper. In the first two years of the publication of comic strips, Snoopy was quite differente from what we see today. Snoopy was a silent dog and did not walk upright. In 1952, Charles Schulz decided to give voice to the dog and then the reader could know what Snoopy thought and Snoopy was able to understand what was happening to the other characters.
In this comic strip there are 4 colored panels with a speech balloons. The language is simple to understand and there aren't captions or onomatopoeia. Here, the sarcasm is because the boy is writing a book about the destroyed faith, but the boy is talking about Charlie's story. The Snoopy's comic is very funny and easy to read and enjoy it.

Calvin and Hobbes, comic strip review
Comic title: calvin and
hobbes
story BY: watterson
art by: watterson
panels: nine multisized
colored panels
distribution by: universal
press syndicate
This comic strip seems to
be made for parents and kids. Some kids may relate to this situation with their
childish behavior, and parents can relate to the comic strip with their family
trips, as they are the ones who suffer the most with kids’ wishes during trips
(God knows!).
The comic strip is made up by nine multisized colored panels
and, in my opinion, it is a little too much for the main idea of the comic
strip, the author could have been more succinct. But despite of this, the
author seemed to have done the right thing when it comes to captions,
onomatopoeias and dialogue , all of them are clear and appropriate for each
panel.
All in all this comic strip is funny and pretty easy
to understand. The author used beachy elements to write
about people’s life and it really gets to people. By using everyday elements,
as Watterson made in this comic strip, he has made Calvin and Hobbes popular.

Calvin and Hobbes - You know what’s the rage this year?... Hats.
© Universal Press Syndicate
Third version of the review
The name of this comic strip is “You know what’s the rage this year?... Hats.”. The comic strip has only 4 panels. All the comic strip is on black and white colors. Each panel has two speech bubble and one tail in each speech bubble. There is only one short gutter between panel third and panel fourth. The second panel is borderless. The balloons have capital letters. In the first panel you can see Hobbes cutting Calvin’s hair and Hobbes calls the haircut “a new wave”. In the same panel Calvin seems doesn’t like it after all because he complains about it even when Hobbes convinces him with a suggestion to make a Mohawk’s haircut. In the third panel the word “some” is on bold in the Hobbes’s balloon, it might means that in some certain places the haircut can be considerate as “Mohawk”. Hobbes finishes the comic strip saying something hilarious about the situation while he holds a hat. The final Hobbes’s sentence is told with serious face expression: “you know what’s the rage this year?... Hats”. The hat that Hobbes holds may be use by Calvin eventually and the last panel is funny because summarizes the first panel as all the story. It’s interesting to see how Calvin changes his feelings and mind during the comic strip in his conversation to Hobbes. The drawing is well done and it’s easy to understand the context as the same kind of story made by the author Bill Watterson.

Calvin and Hobbes - Furry dipping
Written and art by Bill Watterson
Release date: July 6, 1986
Genre: Comedy
Format: Comic Strip in Color
Watterson outdone himself in these 9 panels, he approached the human dissatisfaction.
The comic strip "Furry dipping" Calvin and his hobbes friend are eager to jump into the water from the sea, but when they reach the beach they feel very hot sand, then the water, very cold, are disappointed and run to sand still hot and end return to the car. The father of Calvin is angry because it is possible to they lose the day on the beach.
Calvin and his trusty tiger, Hobbes, are excited to go to the beach, but in all situations they find motives for dissatisfaction: in the beach, sometimes it’s hot, sometimes it’s so cold.
The author explores the text-comics genre. He uses speech bubbles in the first, secound and ninth panels; in the sixth panel the author uses onomatopoeia (sploop, splop), and the others panels Watterson uses captions, but without a box for separating the text from the rest of the panels.
The frustration of Calvin's father is notice by the balloon model and the word "this" bold. Watterson also uses different colors in the speech bubles to attract attention, and the second panel where hobbes says the name of the strip and in the last panel where the calvin's father is furious .
The comic has three different tiers: the first has 2 panels, the second has 4 panels and the third has 3 panels. The comic has harmonious gutters and hasn't borderless panel.
It’s a great comic strip to have some fun and think about.

Calvin and Hobbes is a daily comic strip by American cartoonist Bill Watterson that was syndicated from November 18, 1985 to December 31, 1995. The comic strip has three boxes and the only character is Calvin. The scene happens in a classroom. Normally, it is printed in the newspaper and its main audience are children and adults.
In this comic strip, the cartoonist is criticizing the students, because
Calvin wasn’t paying attention to the class. He was reading a book that
probably wasn’t of the subject of teaching. This reflects the reality of many
students that make other things when they are in class and don’t pay attention
to the teacher. In the meantime, it is a criticism of the teacher that doesn’t
plan interesting lessons to hold the attention of the
students.

The comic strip above is composed of four panels only. Analyzing its composition and the
way the dialogues are arranged (simple writing, with no balloons, expressing
lifeless conversations), here we are facing a situation that shows us the
complexity of the modern society when it comes to the kids' hyperactivity. It
is something that society doesn't understand as a natural thing, as a part of
kids' necessity of having fun, but something seen as a problem if they need to
acquire knowledge in a faster way.
After having an overall description
and idea of this comic strip, it is possible to see that Calvin is under the
influence of Ritalin, a medicine used to improve kids' focus. It is
understandable because Calvin said that, according to his mom, the pills maybe
were working. As he was really focused on the lesson, Hobbes became a normal teddy
bear (better saying, a tiger toy) and consequently it was out of the boundaries
of something that we could understand as the kid's imagination in action.
Calvin was not anymore that kid able to use his imagination nor have fun with
his creativity and innocence. He became a product of modern society, something
that parents really want: a focused kid, with no extravagant and authentic
attitudes. In short, a robot that can be approved by society's requests.

Calvin and
Hobbes - Written by Waterson
This Calvin
and Hobbes comic strip contains 8 boxes, making a link with the real life. The characters
(Calvin and Hobbes) are playing war, and when a dart hits the opponent, the
other side wins. Suddenly, they hit each other at the same time.
This comic
strip has a strong criticism and it makes us think about the war. In the first box,
Hobbes says “how come we play war and not peace?” In the third box, Calvin is exalting
his Nation saying that he is going to be “The fearless American defender of
liberty and democracy”, and Hobbes can be “The loathsome godless communist
oppressor”, clearly showing that American sense of superiority. As the dart hit
them both at the very same time, it means that both lost and the last box
states that it is a stupid game, linking war to a stupid thing.
I strongly
recommend that everyone should read and take a time to think of the real
meaning behind this comic trip. More than reading, people should discuss in classrooms
or with friends about disadvantages of war.
